19th century (likely late 1800s) Swiss Guard Jacket with matching detached sash. Yes, this is the same Swiss Guard known for guarding the Vatican. Around this time, Swiss guard was often comprised of disabled or older soldiers who were no-longer suitable for full-on military practice. They were sent around the continent to become 'policeman of worship', protecting churches and other holy places from thieves and intruders who might disturb the peace, or attempt to steal priceless and holy artifacts. Moreover, these men would open and close the large doors, ring the bells, etc. These days, the Swiss Guard is almost entirely, solely, known for guarding the Vatican. This is what the same contingent/practice has evolved into, but this practice began in the early 1500s.
This uniform/jacket was found in the South of France. It is heavyweight with a soft suede-like exterior, and is mostly comprised of wool. The silver trim is actually mid-fine real silver woven into a fabric and also has semi-fine silver buttons. My favorite detail is all the darning throughout, including some really teeny-tiny, minute repairs, done to nip some holes in the bud before they got larger. The repairs were also done in a deep red thread, to try to obscure them. Comes with a matching heavy sash. Nobody else will have this piece!
